Forge Creek Road Closes for the Winter

Managers at Great Smoky Mountains National have announced that the Forge Creek Road, which extends from the park’s Cable Mill Visitor Center in Cades Cove to the Gregory Ridge Trailhead, has been closed until mid-March.

2009 Basic Technical Training Announcement

This training course is designed for NPS personnel who may be required to evacuate injured or stranded persons from heights and difficult terrain. The course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to perform realistic risk assessments and safely complete difficult technical rescues; no previous experience is necessary. Class size is forty participants.

Winter Road Closure Allows for Recreational Opportunities in Lassen Volcanic National Park

Winter has arrived in full swing at Lassen Volcanic National Park.  As an annual rite of passage, recent storms have closed the road through the park to vehicle traffic for the winter season.  “The arrival of winter to the park closes the park highway to vehicle traffic, but also provides for an abundance of new and wonderful ways to experience the park,” said Superintendent Darlene Koontz.

Yosemite National Park Announces Public Scoping for the Rehabilitation of the Badger Pass Ski Lodge Environmental Assessment

Yosemite National Park is announcing the public scoping period for the Badger Pass Ski Lodge Rehabilitation Environmental Assessment (EA).  Public scoping comments will be used to assist the park in developing a range of reasonable and feasible project alternatives that meet the purpose and need, including a no action alternative, and then analyzing the environmental effects of each alternative.  A 30-day public scoping period for this EA will open on January 14, 2009 and will extend through February 13, 2009. Written comments should be postmarked no later than February 13, 2009.

Elk Environmental Impact Statement Out For Review and Comment

Theodore Roosevelt National Park has released a Draft Elk Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and is soliciting public comment. 

The draft plan/EIS analyzes four action alternatives for initial herd reduction, as well as a “no action” alternative and one alternative that could be used in combination with others for herd maintenance.  The draft EIS does not identify a preferred alternative.

Limited Snowpack Presents Yellowstone Winter Opening Challenges

Yellowstone National Park is ready to open for the 2008-2009 winter season as scheduled next Monday, December 15. Travel through the East Entrance over Sylvan Pass begins a week later. However, if the current limited snowpack on park roads does not significantly improve this weekend, access to the interior of the park may be temporarily limited to certain types of vehicles.

Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Members Celebrate a Year of National Service in 2008

On December 9th, twenty-seven Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) members celebrated their efforts which restored 2000 acres of habitat, conducted ecological monitoring on over 340 sites, educated over 17,200 individuals, and engaged over 2600 volunteers in 2008. At the graduation ceremony, members recounted the highlights of their year of national service for the Sierra Nevada and received accolades and thanks for all their great work. Here in Yosemite, one member, Brittany Woiderski, graduated after completing two years with the program.
