A total of almost 40 firefighters at Great Smoky Mountains National Park are working today to contain the Laurel Falls II Fire, which is located along the Park’s Little River Road about 5 miles west of the Park’s Sugarlands Visitor Center.

Outdoor Expo Planned for May 9

On Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., public lands agency representatives from the Garland County area will be at Hot Springs National Park in the Lamar Bathhouse with displays, maps and information about family outdoor recreation. Smokey Bear will be on hand and agency personnel will also present programs hourly 10:30-2:30.

The National Park Service (NPS) completes comprehensive radiological survey of the Grand Canyon Unified School District athletic fields

A report of the results of the radiological survey of the Grand Canyon High School Athletic Fields (April 15, 2009) confirmed that there are no elevated radiation levels at the fields and that there is no indication that uranium-bearing waste rock is present in the soils underlying the fields.

Newfound Gap Road Designated As Scenic Byway

The Newfound Gap Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park has recently received State Scenic Byway designation by both the States of North Carolina and Tennessee. Newfound Gap Road (US 441), stretching 34 miles between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC, is a principle roadway that completely transverses the park leading to the highest elevations.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns visited Yosemite National Park today to preview his latest film National Parks: America’s Best Idea.  Burns visited Yosemite landmarks, such as Yosemite Falls and Cooks Meadow, interacted with Yosemite Institute participants, and showed a one hour preview to Yosemite National Park employees and park partners.

Bridge installed over the North Fork of the Cascade River

On April 14, a new bridge was installed on Cascade River Road to provide summer access to Cascade Pass. North Cascades National Park maintenance crews, with the assistance of two local construction companies, successfully installed a new bridge on the Cascade River Road over the North Fork of the Cascade River.

Denali Park Road to Open to Mile 30 on Friday, April 24

Mild spring weather has facilitated the efforts of the National Park Service road crew and other park employees to open the road and park facilities to park visitors. The portion of the Denali Park Road between the Savage River (Mile 15) and the Teklanika River Rest Area at Mile 30 will open for travel by private vehicles at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, weather permitting. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead for updated road and weather conditions before driving to the park.

Musical Performance at Cades Cove

Ellie Grace, a singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, will entertain visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Friday, April 24 at 8 p.m. The performance will take place at Cades Cove in the auditorium next to the campground.

Mesa Verde Announces Recovery Act Projects

The National Park Service (NPS) announced today the nearly 800 projects across the country, totaling $750 million with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).  For Mesa Verde National Park, in southwestern Colorado, this means over $14.6 million for six projects.
