Admission to National Parks Free the Weekend of June 5 and 6

In celebration of America’s great outdoors, the four parks of the Southeast Utah Group (Arches, Canyonlands, Hovenweep, and Natural Bridges) will be joining national parks and wildlife refuges around the country in offering free admission to the parks on Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6.

Grizzly Bear Shot by Backpackers in Denali National Park

Two backpackers, a man and woman, encountered a grizzly bear Friday evening while hiking in the dense brush along the edge of Tattler Creek, which is at the west end of the Igloo Canyon, approximately 35 miles from park headquarters.

Annual Bird Walk and Breakfast to be Held in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association invites birders of all ages and experience levels to participate in the 56th Annual Bird Walk on Sunday, June 6. The walk will start at 6:30 a.m. in the Cottonwood Campground in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

National Park Wilderness Hike Highlights the Spring Season

Theodore Roosevelt National Park will usher in the summer season with the first in a series of Wilderness Hikes on Sunday, May 30. This springtime outing will highlight early wildflowers, a symphony of sounds as migratory birds return to their favorite nesting areas, and newborn wildlife. Backcountry Ranger John Heiser will leas the hike into the park’s North Unit wilderness to observe the sights and sounds of the season.

Trail Ridge Road Opens For The 2010 Season

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park opened this morning. Park rangers anticipate that the road will likely be closed overnight through the weekend, due to melting and freezing temperatures at night causing thick layers of ice.  Due to heavy snowpack the Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store, as well as restrooms affiliated with those facilities, will not open until late next week.

Special Evening Program on PAN Parks European Wilderness Organization

Join special guest, Vlado Vancura, Conservation Manager of PAN(Protected Area Network)Parks, the European wilderness protection organization, as he highlights this important organization on Saturday, June 5, at 7 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center in Rocky Mountain National Park. Vlado is based out of Slovakia and previously worked as a ranger at the Tatra National Park, one of RMNP’s sister parks.

Motor Vehicle Accident at Rocky Mountain National Park

At approximately 12:45 p.m. today,a single rollover motor vehicle accident occurred in Rocky Mountain National Park. The vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its wheels in Glacier Creek along Bear Lake Road one half mile above Hollowell Park. Due to the accident Bear Lake Road was closed for over an hour and reopened at 3 p.m.

Yellowstone National Park is seeking public comment on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which looks at vaccinating bison against brucellosis without capturing or handling the animals.

Park to Offer Baseball Programs at Gulpha Gorge

Author Don Duren will present a program on major league baseball history in Hot Springs, at 8:30 p.m. on May 28, in the amphitheater at Gulpha Gorge Campground. Park Ranger Mark Blaeuer will present a program on local Negro Leagues history, at the same time and location on May 29. Both programs will last 45 minutes.

Many seasonal visitor services are open for the Memorial Day weekend. Work to begin on improvements to railway tour bus staging area near the Historic Grand Canyon Depot

Construction will begin next week near the Historic Grand Canyon Depot (Depot) to improve the area where Grand Canyon Railway passengers load and unload buses for tours within Grand Canyon National Park. The project was included as part of Grand Canyon’s 2008 South Rim Visitor Transportation Plan which addressed an array of transportation strategies to promote alternative travel modes to the park, reduce congestion, and better integrate connections between parking, transit, wayfinding and trip planning.
