New Quarter Launched in Yosemite National Park

About 1,200 people attended a ceremony in Yosemite Valley today to launch the new Yosemite Quarter.  United States Mint Director Edmund Moy, Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher, other elected officials and guests spoke at the event.

Beach Fire Final Update

Current Fire Strategy:  National Park Service staff will continue daily monitoring efforts, employing the use of aircraft, and take action as appropriate.  Expect to see smoke as unburned fuels in the fire’s interior continue to burn and smolder. 
This will be the last update on the Beach Fire unless significant fire activity occurs.

Wall Street side of Navajo Loop reopens

Bryce Canyon National Park has reopened the popular Wall Street section of the Navajo Loop Trail which was closed back in April 2010 due to falling rocks. Trail crews have been busy over the past several weeks clearing rocks which have fallen since the closure. Wall Street takes visitors through a narrow passage between towering rock fins and centuries-old Douglas-fir trees.

Fatality Near Cony Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park

At 4 p.m. park rangers found a man's body on a snowfield above Cony Lake in the Hutcheson Lakes drainage near the southern boundary of Rocky Mountain National Park. At this time, the cause of death is unknown.

Taiwanese Woman Drowns in Firehole River

A 22-year-old woman died last night at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained when she slipped under the surface of the water at Firehole River near Old Faithful.  Lin Ching-Ling, a Taiwanese national, was submerged for approximately 5 minutes before bystanders were able to pull her out of the water.

Finding of No Significant Impact

The National Park Service has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for a Vegetation Management Plan at Bryce Canyon National Park. Intermountain Acting Regional Director Mary Gibson Scott approved the FONSI based on the environmental assessment recommended by Kathleen Gonder, Acting Superintendent at Bryce Canyon National Park.

Beach Fire EVENING Update 07/27/10

Today’s Activities:  Two 20-person hotshot crews completed mop up operations by the end of shift today and returned to the Fishing Bridge fire camp at the end of their shift. One heavy, two medium, and one light helicopter supported suppression activities and transported all firefighting equipment/supplies back to the Fishing Bridge fire camp.

37th Annual Youth Conservation Corps Parents Day Celebrated in Yosemite National Park

On Saturday, July 17, 2010, the Yosemite Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) held their 37th annual Parents Day at Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park.  Parents Day marks the half-way point for teenagers participating in the YCC program at Yosemite, and provides an opportunity for parents to see their children spend the day working in the park.  The day is concluded with a barbecue prepared by the YCC kitchen crew and served at a gathering at Badger Pass.
