Shenandoah National Park will launch a year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of its establishment with a ceremony at McCormick Gap Overlook at milepost 102 on Skyline Drive at 2:00 p.m. on November 5, 2010. Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Martha Bogle will receive the “mantle of celebration” from Phil Francis, superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway, whose 75th anniversary celebration took place in 2010. Due to limited space along Skyline Drive, parking for the event will be at Afton Mountain on Route 250, and shuttles will provide transportation to the ceremony at the McCormick Gap Overlook. Shuttle service will begin at 12:30.

Wind Cave National Park, S.D. – Over thirty-four hundred acres south of the Rankin Ridge Fire Tower were recently burned as part of a prescribed fire at Wind Cave National Park. Fire crews from multiple agencies began the ignition process for the American Elk Prescribed Burn by walking along the burn’s perimeter with drip torches Wednesday, October 20.

Rim Drive and the North Entrance are now closed for the season due to snow and icy conditions. The South and West Entrances to Crater Lake National Park remain open to visitor traffic year round.
Grand Canyon National Park will be joining national park units around the country as they waive entrance fees on Veterans Day in recognition of current and former servicemen and –women.
This year Roots in the Cave, November 12-13, focuses on local cave explorer Edmund Turner (1867-1917). Turner is credited with the discovery of Great Onyx Cave, but died penniless and was buried in a pauper’s grave at the Mammoth Cave Baptist Cemetery on Flint Ridge. Roots in the Cave is sponsored by the Mammoth Cave Hotel and Mammoth Cave National Park.

Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher announced that National Park Service (NPS) staff assigned from the United States Public Health Service (PHS) will provide the future clinical care at the Yosemite Medical Clinic, effective, January 1, 2011. The contract for the current provider, Tenet Healthcare Corporation, expires on December 31, 2010.

Grand Canyon National Park’s trail crew recently completed work on Phase V of the Grand Canyon Greenway.
On October 24, 2010, family and friends of the 53 people who died in the worst air disaster in Utah history will gather to dedicate a sculpture on the 63rd anniversary of the crash of Flight 608.
The Chisos Basin Campground is currently undergoing pavement improvement work. The campground will be closed through mid-November.
