Redwood National & State Parks Superintendent Jeff Bomke announced today that the Gold Bluffs Beach Campground in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park will be closed through May 1, 2011. This closure is part of the previously announced and ongoing effort by California State Parks to reduce operating costs through partial closures, seasonal closures and service reductions.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. today, December 30, a large rock fell onto Highway 140/El Portal Road blocking all traffic from entering or exiting Yosemite National Park and closing the road. The rock fell approximately one half mile east of Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal, just inside the Yosemite National Park boundary. The rock is estimated to be approximately 10-15 feet in height, six feet wide, and four feet deep. There were no injuries or damage to property during the rockfall.

The Annual Christmas Bird Count for the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park has been postponed until Monday, January 3, 2011. Volunteers wishing to join in the rescheduled event should meet at the North Unit Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. CST.
“This is another great opportunity for people to count birds in the badlands this winter,” said Superintendent Valerie Naylor.
A wide variety of classes taking place in summer 2011 in Denali and Wrangell-St. Elias National Parks are now available for registration.
