Boy Scouts’ ArrowCorps Volunteer Project Planned for Mount Rainier National Park and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

On Sunday, July 31, about 100 Scouts from across the nation will arrive at Camp Sheppard to kick off ArrowCorps502, a service learning program developed by the Boy Scouts of America’s Chief Seattle Council, T’Kope Kwiskwis Lodge, in partnership with Mount Rainier National Park and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

Dean Wyckoff as New Chief Ranger

Dean Wyckoff has been selected as the new Chief Ranger for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. He began his assignment on July 17, filling the position previously held by Tom Cox, who retired from the NPS in January.

Wind Cave National Park Superintendent Receives Award

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. – Wind Cave National Park superintendent Vidal Davila recently received the Director’s Superintendent of the Year Award for Natural Resource Stewardship for Fiscal Year 2010 for the Midwest Region. The Midwest Region is made up of 58 parks units in 11 states. This award is given annually in recognition of outstanding contributions in natural resource management by a National Park Service superintendent.

Yosemite National Park Unveils Largest Solar Energy System in the National Park System

Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher led a ribbon cutting ceremony today, July 27, to dedicate the El Portal Photovoltaic Project. Neubacher was joined by representatives from the offices of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Congressman Jeff Denham (R-19th), Mariposa County Supervisor Lee Stetson, contractors, and National Park Service staff. The event dedicated the largest grid-connected photovoltaic system within the National Park Service (NPS).

Recent Fires at Mesa Verde

The latest fire in Mesa Verde National Park was started by lightning on July 24. The fire is located about two miles south of Morefield Campground on Morefield Ridge, and is currently 1/10th of an acre in size.

Firewood Restrictions to Include Neighboring Counties

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced that its current policy to prohibit the transportation of firewood from federal and state quarantined areas into the park has been tightened to include several neighboring counties in Tennessee. The affected areas are Anderson, Blount, Grainger, Knox, Loudon, and Union counties.
