From January 30 to March 8, on weekdays, elevator service into Carlsbad Cavern will be limited to a few hours per day while the elevators undergo routine maintenance to keep them running safely and smoothly. On weekends and holidays, one elevator will be available throughout the day. Modifications to the elevator, tour, and cave operation schedule included in the news release.

2012 Artists-in-Residence Announced

Three visual artists and three writers were selected from over 300 applicants to participate in this year’s Artist-in-Residence program at Denali National Park and Preserve. Deborah Bouchette, Trine Bumiller, Kim Heacox, Marybeth Holleman, Rika Mouw, and Linda Schandelmeir will each have the opportunity to experience and be inspired by the park during summer 2012. They will stay at the historic East Fork cabin, where they can look out onto the braided channels of the East Fork River, multi-colored rock formations of Polychrome Mountain, and the snow-capped peaks of the Alaska Range.

The incident command team, lead by Park Ranger Kelly Bush, is planning to send field teams out once conditions become favorable. Efforts are currently focused on organizing a team of skilled skiers and climbers who have experience in negotiating the terrain to Camp Muir in difficult travel conditions.

Nevada, the Silver State, is known for its mining industry. But University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) microbiologist Dennis Bazylinski and members of his lab search any body of water anywhere to find new forms of microbial magnetism. And in a basin named Badwater within Death Valley National Park, Bazylinski and his postdoctoral associate, Christopher Lefèvre, found what they were looking for.

Yosemite National Park Announces Extension of Interim Permit Program for the Half Dome Cables

Yosemite National Park will require Day Use Permits seven days per week for climbing the Half Dome cables during the summer 2012 season. This is an extension of the interim permit system that was implemented beginning in 2010. Permits will be required seven days per week to ascend the Half Dome cables. This is part of an interim program designed to address crowding and safety issues on the cables.
